Pontifical Mass Holy Cross Leicester

Although it is a little bit South I thought something should be posted since not much has yet appeared elsewhere. Bishop Malcolm McMahon kindly celebrated a Pontifical Mass at the throne for the feast of the Immaculate Conception (10th anniversary of his episcopal ordination) followed by a blessing of a new Martyrs shrine at Holy Cross Priory Leicester. The Dominican community attended in choir with the prior, Fr Periera O.P., acting as Assistant Priest. Fr Crean O.P. acted as Deacon at the altar with Bro. Pearson O.P. as Subdeacon and Bro. Davoren O.P. as Subdeacon of the Cross. Frs Cahill and O'Connor assisted as Deacons at the Throne. Richard Hawker did an outstanding job of preparing the servers and as MC at Mass with the assistance of Nick Ianicelli. The parish schola did a superb job with Byrd's Mass for 3 voices and the Gregorian Propers.

Recollection and Douai Martyrs

This Saturday is the feast of the Douai Martyrs. There will be a High Mass at St Joseph`s, Gateshead at 12 noon. This feast has an added poignancy this year given the uncertainty over the future of Ushaw college, the northern successor of Douai. The celebrant will be Fr Simon Leworthy FSSP.

Preceding the Mass there will be a morning of recollection for lay people given by Fr Leworthy. This will start at 10am and will include time for confessions. Other parts of the country have days of recollection organised by the LMS but this is the first time we have attempted this in the North East. If you are coming you may like to bring a packed lunch for after the Mass. Many thanks to Fr Adrian Dixon, the parish priest of St Joseph`s for letting us use his church for this event.

St Joseph`s, Gateshead is very easy to reach by public transport: it is immediately opposite Gateshead Metro station.

Pontifical High Mass at the Throne at Holy Cross Leicester

The Prior and community of the Dominican Priory of the Holy Cross Leicester are pleased to announce:
PONTIFICAL SOLEMN HIGH MASS AT THE THRONE
Celebrant: Bishop Malcolm McMahon, OP, Bishop of Nottingham
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Wednesday 8th December, 2010 at 7pm
Followed by the consecration of a Shrine to the English Martyrs.
I think I am correct that this will be the first Pontifical High Mass of a Bishop in his Diocese for a very long time indeed! It would be wonderful to have as many people as possible attend this.
Clergy are invited to sit in choir. Please bring Cotta and biretta, and stole if receiving communion. Please could you inform me at the e-mail address below.
If any clergy or servers who feel they would like to be part of the sanctuary party, please contact me at r_hawker@hotmail.com. They would need to be free to attend a few rehearsals.

Once a few organisational hitches had been over come the Mass for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross passed off well. Thanks are due to the clergy of St Charles for their hospitality. Thanks also to the ubiquitous Rudgate Singers. Thanks finally to Richard Hawker who is due to move from Hull at the end of the month. His services will be missed both there and in Scunthorpe.

Regular Sunday Mass at St Catherine's

I am very happy to be able to say that starting on the Feast of the Assumption, 15th August at 11.30am, Holy Mass will be offered in the Traditional Form of the Roman Rite here at St Catherine's each Sunday. We will be starting quietly with Low Mass and see how things go.

For anyone travelling, our little church is on the outskirts of Leyland not far from junctions 28 & 29 of the M6.

Another Useful Website

I'm probably the last person to find this website but I flag it up just in case. Amonst other things it contains exstensive translations from the 1962 Rituale and a video tutorial for serving Low Mass. It looks like they are still planning to extend the video library to include tutorials for Missa Cantata and Solemn Mass. http://www.sanctamissa.org

The Annual Founders' Day Memorial Requiem for John and Josephine Bowes

The annual Requiem for the founders of the church & museum.

Some info from the parish website...

If John Bowes' birth had been legitimate, then he would have become the Earl of Strathmore and our history would probably have been different. As it was, he inherited lands and money from the old Earl, his father, and after a classic education for a gentleman of his time he developed an interest in the theatre, was a successful owner of race horses (his horse Western Australian won the Derby in 1853), was a popular MP for several years, and together with his French wife Josephine became a great collector of French paintings and other artifacts which he intended to house in a great museum to be built at Barnard Castle. John was not a Catholic, but his wife was. He was devoted to his wife, who was much younger than him, and when she died in 1874 he decided to fulfill her desire to have a chapel next to the museum on which work had already started. The chapel reached the height of the eves when John became short of money to complete the museum. Work was stopped, and the chapel stood for almost fifty years as a folly. John died in 1885, but his will was not probated until 1905. Then began years of discussion between the trustees of the museum and the trustees of the chapel as to its siting and use. Eventually in 1926 agreement was reached for the chapel to be moved to a corner of the museum site, and the building was finished and opened in 1928. The bodies of John and Josephine Bowes were brought from their temporary resting-place at the vault at Gibside Hall, Dunston, and they rest now behind the apse of St Mary's Church with their tomb directly facing the front door of their Museum. A Requiem Mass for Founders' Day is celebrated each year in July.

Sung Masses at Scarborough & York

Taken from the Middlesbrough LMS blog; and of interest to those in Yorkshire, and along the east coast:

These Masses will be in the usus antiquior and will be celebrated by Fr Stephen Maughan with the music provided by the Cambridge University Polyphonic Choir, directed by Matthew Ward. Matthew Ward is a PhD student at Cambridge, specialising in twelvth centuary Anglo-Norman Chant. We have been informed that the music will include works by Byrd and Tallis, as well as the Winchester Trooper, Dunstable and a movement from the Missa Caput.

The locations and times are:-

Church of St Peter
Castle Road
Scarborough
Wednesday 30 th June
5.00pm

Church of St Charles
Jarratt Street
Hull
Sunday 4th July
12.30pm

These will be rare opportunities to attend Mass with such high quality music, so please come along and tell your friends about them.

The Mass at St. Charles will not actually start until nearer 1pm, as Fr. Maughan is covering at another parish and will have to dash here, so there will be Exposition, Rosary and Benediction beforehand.

It would be wonderful to see a high turn out for these events, especially the Hull one! IT is a great encouragement and support for those who do so much to prepare for the Liturgy, and who put so much effort into it; it is also a strong sign to others that acctually people are interested in this form of the Roman Rite!

If there are any servers who are planning on attending, please do bring a cassock and cotta, as we shall certainly be able to make use of you!

(Just in case anyone missed this news/story): 1962 Missale Romanum reprint (now a photo of the cover!)

Shamelessly lifted from Jon Sonnen's blog, here's a link (below) to an amazingly hi-resolution mega-zoom enabled image of the cover of the "new" 1962 altar missal as re-published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana on February 10th 2010. Just keep zoom-clicking the image. As far as I am aware this is the first cover photo "doing the rounds". The sheer quality of the binding appears to be there for all to see. Priced at €210 (£180-ish?). So, when in Rome...
